WordPress Developer – Pedestrian Jobs


Pedestrian Group are currently on the hunt for an experienced WordPress Developer to take the reins on and optimise our digital product. In this role, you will lead the product engineering and web development across our group of brands to ensure we deliver market leading web experiences for our readers.

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

Core site development and maintenance

  • Build and guide the development and maintenance of the sites for
    our core editorial news brands
  • UX improvements and maintenance on ancillary brands and e-commerce platforms like Pedestrian Jobs and Open Air Cinemas

Creative projects and features

  • Build and guide the development of ad hoc commercial and
    creative projects that deliver to short term commercial and
    editorial requirements.
  • Suggest new features and capabilities across all assets

Team Effectiveness

  • Ensure team effectiveness by working collaboratively with internal
    and external stakeholders, including Technical Manager, Creative
    Project Managers and external suppliers
  • Direct line management of any internal development team
    members
  • Look for cost effective efficiencies including tools used, processes
    and partners

Required Skills:

  • Experience managing internal and external development resources
  • Proven WordPress engineering skills, deep understanding of modern theming and plugin development
  • Autonomous self-starter with a desire to learn with excellent analytical skills
  • Previous experience managing multiple projects to tight deadlines and budgets
  • People management and ability to train and develop the internal team
  • Experience with Atlassian deployment programs Bitbucket and GitHub
  • Expertise in front end and back end web development practices
  • Expert understanding of Cloudflare, Fast.ly and WordPress VIP, Solid SQL, PHP, HTML5, JavaScript experience

As our preferred candidate, you will have:

  • Knowledge of and experience in the online publishing industry
  • Web performance skills and understanding
  • Experience with Google Ads and Data Stack (GAM, GA360, Optimise360, BigQuery, DataStudio)
  • Agile project management skills
  • DevOps capabilities and keen interest in product development
